How can I use my i-card or value card
on the Springfield campus?

Can I use my i-card with a meal plan and/or Campus Cash debit account, or do I get a separate card for my accounts?

You can have multiple accounts on your i-card, including meal plans and Campus Cash.

How do I add money to a meal plan or Campus Cash account, and how much can I add?

During office hours, you can add money to your meal plan or Campus Cash debit account at the ID Center, the Bursar Office or online from the "My Cash Account " option located on the i-card Web site. The Bursar Office accepts cash, checks, and credit cards. The ID Center accepts cash (exact change only) and checks. Online, only credit cards are accepted.

Outside of office hours or at any time, you can add value to your Campus Cash or meal plan accounts online, or you can add money to your Campus Cash or meal plan accounts at the CSVT value-adding stations located

  • On the lower level of HSB, near the computer lab
  • On the main level of Brookens Library
  • Next to the vending machines in SLB
  • On the first floor of LRH, outside the vending room
  • Next to the Bursar Office in PAC
  • On the first floor of UHB, near the northeast entrance

These machines accept cash only. They accept old and new $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills. They do not accept $2 bills.

Funds are available a few minutes after you deposit them.

At any given time, you can have up to $1,300 in each of your accounts.

A Note on Funds Deposited on i-cards before August 2002

Funds deposited on i-cards with the old value card readers in HSB and Brookens Library do not work in the new readers set up in August 2002.

If you have any questions about these funds, call the ID Center at 217-206-7718.

How do I check my balance or get an account or meal plan statement?

Balances

We cannot give account balances over the phone. You can check your balance by visiting

  • The Bursar Office
  • The ID Center
  • Any cash-to-card machine (CSVT) location on campus
  • The i-card website at www.icard.uillinois.edu (click on "My Cash Account")

Your residential meal plan balance displays after each transaction you make

  • At the Food Emporium or LRH Café cash register
  • At a campus vending machine

If there are no funds left in your meal plan account, your Campus Cash balance displays instead.

Campus Cash balances are available

  • By request at the Food Emporium and LRH Café cash registers
  • When you insert your card in any of the campus's CSVTs and select the balance inquiry option

Statements

To get an account statement, e-mail us with your University ID number (UIN), and we will print a statement that you can pick up at the ID Center. Please tell us which account(s) you want a statement for: Campus Cash, meal plan, or both. Specify the dates you want to see.

No statements are available for value cards.

If my card is lost, stolen, or damaged, what happens to the funds in my accounts?

Funds on lost, stolen, or damaged i-cards are automatically transferred to your new i-card when you replace the old one. You may be liable for a portion of the funds resulting from unauthorized use of your lost or stolen i-card.

Funds on lost, stolen, or damaged value cards cannot be recovered and are not refunded.

If my card is lost or stolen, what am I liable for?

Because the accounts on your i-card are declining balance accounts, no one can run up any charges with your i-card the way they can with a credit card. Even so, it is important to contact the ID Center immediately to deactivate your i-card to prevent the funds on the card from being used. Deactivating your i-card freezes the funds so no one can use them.

To report a lost or stolen i-card, call 217-206-7718, any time 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

An i-card reported lost or stolen will be deactivated. Once deactivated, purchases cannot be made with that i-card.

To reactivate your i-card, you must visit the ID Center during regular office hours and bring your card with you. No i-card will be reactivated over the phone.

We cannot reactivate an old i-card if a new i-card has been issued. If you recover your old card after receiving a new one, destroy the old card..

What meal plans can I put on my card?

You can put any residential meal plan on your i-card, as long as you meet the criteria for the plan.

Residential meal plans are mandatory for Capitol Scholars. Apartment residents may participate in a residential plan.

The terms and conditions for these meal plans are available at this site.

For dining and vending, funds are deducted from your residential meal plan; if the balance is low and you have a Campus Cash debit account, funds are then deducted from your Campus Cash account. Campus Cash purchases are subject to sales tax.

How do I open a residential meal plan account?

To start a residential meal plan, complete a dining services contract in the ID Center and pay the meal plan cost.

Beginning January 20, 2006, all CSVT machines accept cash deposits for Campus Cash and meal plans.

When does my meal plan expire?

Residential meal plans expire at the end of the academic year, after graduation, assuming that you maintain registration for classes and on-campus residence through the academic year. Summer meal plans expire at the end of the summer term.

What if I buy a meal plan and then leave the University?

If you leave the University, your i-card becomes inactive, and you can no longer use it to access your meal plan account.

Can I cancel my meal plan and/or get a refund?

To cancel a meal plan, go to the ID Center or the Housing Office and fill out a Request for Refund form (forms are available in both places). Your request must be in writing and must include the reason for the request, as well as all appropriate supporting documentation.

Refunds for unused residential meal plan funds are granted only under the following conditions:

  • You withdraw from all classes at the University or have documented medical circumstances that would keep you from further using the meal plan.
  • You cancel the plan before the end of the tenth week of the fall or spring semesters or the fourth week of the summer semester.

If approved, your residential meal plan refund will be based on the original cash value placed in the account, minus the value of all previous purchases charged to the account. No refund is made if the value remaining following such calculation is less than $5. Refunds are made to the cardholder's student account.

What is a Campus Cash debit account?

Campus Cash is the Springfield campus i-card–linked debit account that students and staff can use at the following locations:

  • Food Emporium
  • LRH Café
  • PAC Coffee Kiosk
  • Campus vending machines
  • Convenience copiers
  • Computer print stations
  • Media Lab (first floor of Brookens Library)
  • Student Center Snack Bar (SLB, near the gym)
  • Sangamon Auditorium
  • LRH laundry facilities
  • Follett's UIS Bookstore

Campus Cash debit accounts are separate from residential meal plan accounts but are accessed with the same i-card.

For dining and vending, funds are deducted from your residential meal plan account first; if the balance is low, funds are then deducted from your Campus Cash account. Campus Cash purchases are subject to sales tax.

Follett's UIS Bookstore now accepts Campus Cash as a form of payment. You can use money you have placed on your Campus Cash account to make purchases at Follett's UIS Bookstore, when you present your photo i-card. Campus Cash accounts on non-photo i-cards will not be accepted at Follett's UIS Bookstore as a form of payment.

The terms and conditions for Campus Cash debit accounts are available at this Web site. For more information on Campus Cash accounts and i-cards, contact the ID Center at 217-206-7718, Public Affairs Center, Room 108.

How do I open a Campus Cash debit account?

You don't need to do anything special to open a Campus Cash debit account. Just deposit funds on your i-card and read the terms and conditions for Campus Cash debit account .

When does my Campus Cash debit account expire?

A Campus Cash debit account does not expire, unless it has a positive balance but there has been no activity for 12 months or more. The account is then considered to be inactive, and a monthly inactive account maintenance fee of $5 is assessed against it until one of the following occurs:

  • The account is returned to active status.
  • The account balance reaches $0.
  • The account has been inactive for 48 months, at which time, remaining funds are turned over to the Unclaimed Property of the University of Illinois.

Funds carry over from semester to semester and academic year to academic year.

If you leave the University, your i-card becomes inactive, and you can no longer use it to access your Campus Cash account. You may request a refund of unused funds, although a processing fee and any outstanding balance on your student account is deducted from the refund amount.

Can I get a refund at the end of the academic year or if I leave the University?

You may request a refund at the end of the academic year, when you graduate, or when you leave the University. To request a refund, fill out the Refund Request form available at the ID Center or the Bursar Office. Turn the form in at the ID Center. A $5 refund-processing fee is assessed to your account. If you are a student, Campus Cash refunds are transferred to your student account to cover any outstanding balances. The remaining credit balance, if any, is sent to your permanent address of record.

What are value cards and how are they different from i-cards?

Value cards are non-photo cards intended for use by visitors to campus who are not eligible for i-cards. Value cards can be purchased for $5 at the Campus Cash CSVTs in HSB, UHB, or the Brookens Library.

You can deposit funds on a value card to use on campus for copying, printing, laundry (in LRH), vending, and dining purchases in the Food Emporium, LRH Café, and the Student Center Snack Bar.

Value cards do not provide access to any campus facilities and are not considered to be University ID cards.

Where can I get a value card?

Value cards can be purchased for $5 at the Campus Cash CSVTs in HSB, UHB, or the Brookens Library.

Value cards are dispensed with a zero balance. To activate the account, you must make a deposit.

You can add funds to your value card at the CSVTs located

  • On the lower level of HSB, near the computer lab

These machines accept cash only. The CSVTs accept old and new $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills. They do not accept $2 bills.

Funds are available a few minutes after you deposit them.

You can have as much money in a value card account as you can in a Campus Cash account. However, you are strongly encouraged to keep the amount as low as possible, since unused funds from a lost or stolen value card cannot be returned or credited to you. Also, when you no longer need the card, value card funds are not refunded and cannot be transferred to another value card or to an i-card.

When does my value card expire?

Value cards do not expire, but if a value card account is inactive for 18 months, the account is deactivated. For a deactivated account with a positive balance, a monthly inactive account maintenance fee of $5 is assessed until the account is returned to active status or the balance reaches $0.

What happens to my value card and any funds left on it when I no longer need the card?

Value card holders should use up all funds on their cards. No refunds are given for value cards.

Funds cannot be transferred from one value card account to another or from a value card account to an i-card-linked account.

A Note on value cards purchased before August 2002

Value cards sold after mid-August 2002 are different from the ones sold prior to that time. The old value cards do not work in the new readers set up for the new cards. Please contact the i-card ID Center if you have questions (217-206-7718).
