What types of ID cards are available at the University?
There are several types of ID cards, and availability varies by campus. There are i-cards, visitor cards, special user cards, department cards, and departmental name badges, just to name a few. Your Campus ID Center can determine what type of University ID card you are eligible for.
What ID card am I eligible for?Your Campus ID Center can determine what type of University ID card you are eligible for. i-cards are typically issued to individuals with ongoing formal relationships with the University, including students who are registered and faculty/staff with ongoing appointments. Individuals with i-cards may be eligible for more services because of their ongoing relationship with the University. Only i-cards have the i-card logo on the card front.
Other card types (visitor cards, special user cards, department cards, etc.) are issued to individuals who have a limited or periodic relationship with the University. The i-card logo is not printed on these cards.
What is an i-card, and why do I need one?The i-card is the official University identification card. It bears the official i-card logo. University of Illinois students, faculty, and staff are eligible for an i-card. If you have questions about your eligibility, contact your Campus ID Center. You may be eligible for campus services, based on the fees you have paid or other University arrangement. The i-card can be used to verify your status and enable your access to University services and facilities, such as:
Services vary from campus to campus. In Chicago, members can use their i-cards for parking; in Springfield, i-cards can be used for Campus Cash debit accounts; and in Urbana, i-cards can be used to board MTD buses. Some campus buildings use the i-card for access, and some campus units and local merchants offer discounts to i-card holders. You may be asked to present your i-card, enter your University ID number (UIN), or scan your i-card's barcode or magnetic stripe to access services and facilities.
What if I don't want an i-card?
You do not have to get an i-card. Because the i-card is the official University of Illinois identification card, all University of Illinois students, faculty, and staff members are eligible for i-cards. If you are eligible for an i-card but choose not to get one, you may not be able to access certain card-dependent facilities or services on your campus.
Does having an ID card entitle me to services?
Possession of any University ID card does not guarantee services. Your current status with the University and/or the fees you have paid permit you to access certain facilities and services with your ID card.
How to Get Your IDYour University ID is easy to get:
In just a few minutes, you'll have a personal University ID made to last as long as you study or work here. IDs are available only to eligible individuals, and fees may apply. Contact your ID Center for more information. To get a new or replacement ID, you must present one of the forms of identification listed below. This ID must be current (not expired) and must include an identifiable photo of you.

Are online students eligible for i-cards?Off-campus students do not automatically receive i-cards, but can request one from their home department, which will request one from their campus ID Center. i-cards for off-campus students are normally issued without a photo. To use University services and facilities, you must present a photo ID along with your non-photo i-card. You may get a photo i-card if you visit your campus ID Center in person. As for any University photo ID, you must present a valid, government-issued photo ID.
Questions? Contact your campus ID Center for answers.
How can I replace my ID card?Replacement IDs are issued at campus ID Centers. As for any University ID, you must present a valid, government-issued photo ID to be issued a new card. Complete requirements are at How do I get an ID card? The replacement fee for i-cards is $20, which you can pay at the ID Center by cash or check (exact amount only). On the Springfield campus, you may also pay by credit card, cash or check at the Bursar's Office first and bring your receipt to the ID Center.
Questions? Contact your campus ID Center for answers.
What if my ID card has been lost or stolen? If your ID card has been lost or stolen, immediately contact your Campus ID Center. Your card will be deactivated so it cannot be used by someone else. If your card has been stolen, you should also notify the Campus Police. Visit your Campus ID Center to obtain a replacement ID card. A $20 replacement fee will be assessed.
If you recover your lost or stolen card after you get a replacement card, destroy the old, recovered card, which will have been deactivated. Replacement fees will not be refunded.
What if my ID card is damaged?
Take your damaged card to your Campus ID Center. If your card does not function properly or has been damaged through normal wear and tear (as determined by the ID Center staff), the $20 card replacement fee may be waived.
If my name changes, do I need to get a new ID card?Yes. Your official University ID should reflect accurate information about you, so if your name changes, you should have your ID card updated. If you are a student, first go to the Office of Admissions and Records (OAR) to report your name change. OAR will give you a pink sheet showing that your name has been changed. Bring the pink sheet and your old card to your Campus ID Center. If you turn in your old ID card, it will be replaced for no charge. If you do not have an ID card to turn in, the replacement fee is $20. If you are a faculty or staff member, first, change your name with UI Human Resources by completing the Name and SSN Change Form in NESSIE and submitting it to your unit supervisor with the appropriate supporting documentation. You must be able to validate your name change as agreeing with your Tax ID name by providing your social security card. Once your name change is made in Banner and reflected in the i-card database, your new i-card can be printed. (You may want to call the ID Center to confirm the name change has been updated in the i-card database; updates may take up to 24 hours from the time the change is made in NESSIE.) Go to the ID Center to get your new i-card. If you turn in your old i-card, we will replace the card at no charge. If you do not have an i-card to turn in, the replacement fee is $20.
If I currently receive a paper ID from the University, can I get an i-card?Having a paper ID does not entitle you to an i-card. You will continue to receive a paper ID from the University, and it will continue to be valid.
Generally speaking, i-cards are for current University of Illinois students and current and retired faculty-staff members. Others may be eligible under certain University policies or agreements.
What is a prox card, and how can I get one?
Proximity capability is merely a feature of an ID card; proximity ("prox") cards are not a separate type of card, rather they are unique because of the type of card stock on which they are printed. Prox cards have a thin, flat antenna inside them. They enable cardholders to wave their cards in front of specialized receivers ("prox readers") to access certain facilities. Prox cards are only issued to individuals who must have prox capabilities for regular University business. Prox cards are currently issued at the Chicago ID Centers and at the i-card Programs office on the Urbana campus.
